"We just need to keep on delivering what our players want," he says, "which is more of what has made our game great all along: fun action combat, unparalleled character customization and some of the best dungeon instances in MMOs today." Paiz says he isn't worried about competition from another D&D branded online game. Which one you prefer will come down to which rules you prefer and what you're looking for in an MMO. They're both D&D, but they're very different games. The game is less complex with a somewhat faster-paced combat system. Neverwinter utilizes a modified 4th Edition D&D ruleset and a more action-oriented combat system than Dungeons & Dragons Online. Not every pen-and-paper rule translates perfectly to a video game.Įarlier this summer a second Dungeons & Dragons MMORPG launched. Paiz say the Turbine team has made "many adjustments and interpretations of these rules" though all with Wizard of the Coast's understanding. "We make sure that the stories we are telling are aligned with what is happening in the lore of the game worlds in their books and games, and we review with them the many rule details that get implemented in our game as well." "We have a great relationship with the folks at Wizards of the Coast and we work closely with them to plan and approve everything that goes into the game," Paiz also notes. The game was also the first major Western MMO to go free-to-play, and Turbine was able to "pioneer how that model would work for our audience" according to Paiz. "The other big reason," Paiz continues, "is our willingness to try new things in service of creating great play experiences for our players." He says the "action combat based on the D&D rules and elaborate dungeon crawls with traps, puzzles, surprises and many paths to victory" are all part of the innovations that helped the game garner a loyal following. This includes things like dungeon master narration, seeing dice rolls, and a really impressive level of character tweaking. "One of the strongest reasons is the enduring appeal of the D&D brand and that players experience so much of what they loved about playing table top Dungeons & Dragons when they play DDO," Turbine executive producer Fernando Paiz tells me. I ask Turbine why the seven-year-old MMO still has such long legs, and they tell me it's partly the appeal of the D&D brand and partly their willingness to adapt. The Shadowfell Conspiracy also brings changes to the UI and to the enhancement system, simplifying the skill trees while still leaving an enormous amount of room for customization of characters.įor fans of the game, and for any D&D fan and MMO player, the new system is both more accessible and still incredibly deep. The iconic heroes start out at level 15, giving experienced players (and newbies alike) access to high level gaming from the get-go. (Though, to be quite honest, the Purple Dragon Knight looks like the best of the three to me.)
